"Caring for the Land"

As many of our fellow Hawaiian citizens are, we at Maui Brewing Co. are very concerned about our island paradise home and are continuously looking for ways in which we can reduce our dependency on products which destroy our environment. We've only just begun working towards this goal but we are happy with the progress we've made:

Vehicles Run on Vegetable Oil

Our restaurant was disposing of gallons of vegetable oil weekly. This seemed such a waste! Owners Garrett & Melanie conducted a little research project - they wanted to study the feasibility of creating their own bio-diesel. Their research showed that several types of bio-diesel exist. Due to limitations with space and the fact that the method they chose does not involve the storage or mixing of volatile or otherwise unsafe chemicals, they ultimately decided to go with the DSE simple conversion method which is, in fact, closer to the original European bio-diesel that Rudolph Diesel himself formulated, as opposed to what is currently commonly referred to as "bio-diesel" (read more on this at the banner link below). These more common bio-diesel products also seem completely environmentally friendly - it just was not the best choice for their situation.

So, today Maui Brewing Co.'s used oil is converted into bio-diesel fuel that is essentially a by-product of cooking some of their restaurant's menu items! Garrett and Melanie's 1999 VW Beetle and 1999 Ford F250 run 100% on this environmentally-friendly gasoline alternative.

And, yes, it's true: if you happen to be driving behind one of these vehicles, you will likely smell a faint aroma of french fries! (Well, it's better than smelling petroleum emissons!)

Canning vs. Bottling

Maui Brewing Co. microbrews are now available in cans. Yes! Cans, not bottles!

The Hawaiian Islands host millions of tourists annually. The tourism industry is significant in keeping our state economically healthy. For this reason, as well as for the cleanliness of our environment and safety of all, cans make the most sense! For one, cans don't break like glass bottles do and it is particularly important for us to do whatever we can to keep our 120 miles of coastline, 30 miles of beaches and other public areas free of broken glass!

There are other reasons that cans are really the best choice. Of course, they can be recycled. But, in addition to that, they are virtually unbreakable, they are lighter to carry than bottles and easier to chill. Also, key to the purity of our beers: cans eliminate light damage and the risk of oxidation to our beers. This will ensure that our canned microbrews will be flavorful, brisk and satisfying.

The myth of the “Metallic Taste”:

For a long time now, beer in a bottle was considered the best packaging for good beer. This is no longer the case with modern aluminum cans because they are lined with an “internal coating”. This lining prevents the beer from ever making contact with the aluminum and ensures no metallic aftertaste.
